About

My name is John Koontz. I’m a photographer.

I’ve been shooting for 15 years, on and off. I wasn’t able to really throw myself into the art until I finished college and got a real job. It just so happens that digital photography was starting to boom at the same time. The thorn in the heel of my hobby was always finding the cash for film and processing. My new problem was convincing my wife that I NEEDED $1500 to buy a D100. Fortunately, the Nikon D70 was announced right about the time I just couldn’t wait any more (and that my wife said yes). And only $1000. What a bargain!

I’ve been a Nikon fan since high school, I’m on my third body (N50, N80, D70). I love the controls and the way the bodies fit in my hand. And the barrel on zoom lenses twist in the right direction!

I use a Nikon D70. I’ve owned a variety of lenses, all Nikon. I use the SB-800 flash (i-TTL kicks arse!)

I use Photoshop (on a PC) for processing, Bridge for organizing, and flickr for sharing.

I no longer have ANY film equipment.

Since my son was born, 90% of my shots are of him and family. I love candids, portraits, and some landscape photography. I play around with stills on occasion. I’d like to experiment with more street photography, macro, and studio lighting.

I’m trying to fit my fondest hobby into a busy life. I hope this blog helps us both figure out how to fit it all in.
